Early Life and Family
Brown was born in Inglewood, California, to a single mother who worked for the United States Army as a tank technician. Brown was reared in Tupelo, Mississippi, and began making music in high school under the title “Dem Outta St8 Boyz” alongside his brother Slim Jxmmi and local rapper Lil Pantz.
Brown and his brother Slim Jxmmi experienced homelessness following their high school graduation, during which they squatted in an abandoned house.
Swae Lee Career
He and Slim formed Rae Sremmurd in 2013 after signing with Mike Will Made-label It’s EarDrummers Entertainment. Since then, they’ve produced three studio albums under EarDrummers: SremmLife, SremmLife 2, and SR3MM.
Brown made his solo debut in March 2015 with Mike Will Made It’s “Drinks on Us,” which also featured Future and The Weeknd.
In September 2015, Brown appeared on Wiz Khalifa’s “Burn Slow,” which peaked at 83 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking his first solo entry.
Brown was featured on “Unforgettable” by French Montana in April 2017. Brown’s first chart-topping single as a solo artist reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100.
Brown was featured on the September 2018 song “Sativa” by Jhené Aiko.
Brown followed up with the release of “TR666” with Trippie Redd two months later. On May 4, 2018, nearly two years after the album’s initial announcement.
In August 2016, Brown released Swaecation as part of a triple album package that included Rae Sremmurd’s third studio album, SR3MM, and Slim Jxmmi’s debut studio album as a solo artist, Jxmtro.
He made a cameo appearance on Ellie Goulding and Diplo’s October 2018 single “Close to Me.” Brown, along with Lil Pump and Maluma, also participated in XXXTentacion’s song “Arms Around You.”
On October 18, 2018, Brown appeared as a featured artist on Post Malone’s song “Sunflower” for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which became Post’s third and Brown’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper as a solo artist.
He collaborated with Madonna on her album Madame X’s song “Crave” in May 2019. Brown collaborated with Canadian rapper Drake on the August 2019 single “Won’t Be Late,” produced by Tekno and Mike Will Made It.
He collaborated with Joji, Jackson Wang, and Major Lazer on 88rising’s “Walking” in October 2019. He released the single “Someone Said” in 2020, a cover of Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.”
Also collaborated with Chloe x Halle on the Mike Will Made It-produced “Catch Up” from the latter’s album Ungodly Hour, and he appeared on Arizona Zervas’s hit single “Roxanne” remix. Brown’s “Reality Check” single was released on June 18, 2020.
In October 2020, Brown invested in XSET, an esports group.
