Early life
Baker was born in Houston on April 22, 1990, to missionary parents. Baker and his family moved all around the world and took up residence abroad from Egypt to Germany, as well as throughout the United States, in Chicago, Denver, and Cleveland. He and his father relocated to Denver after his mother left, and the pair took up residence with Baker’s aunt.
Baker faced bullying from other children in his neighborhood as a result of his father’s depression and unemployment. He began listening to rap in the sixth grade while attending Hamilton Middle School in Denver, a school with a diverse student body.
Baker became interested in hip hop as a child after listening to DMX’s “We Right Here” from the album The Great Depression (2001).
Baker dropped out of school following his father’s departure and began making a name for himself by calling out senior classmates. In 2005, his father returned to take them both to Kuwait before they were forced to return to the United States and enroll at Shaker Heights High School in Cleveland.

Due to his rapid-fire delivery, fans gave Kelly the stage name Machine Gun Kelly. His debut mixtape, titled ‘Stamp of Approval,’ helped him make a name for himself in the industry and gain exposure.
Even as he was releasing mixtapes and building a fan base, MGK was still going through a rough patch. He was on the verge of eviction and was forced to work at Chipotle in order to pay his rent.
A few years later, MGK released the Lace-Up Mixtape, which was filled with love for Cleveland. As a result, he quickly gained popularity in his hometown.
