The Weeknd Early life

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born in Toronto, Ontario, on February 16, 1990, the son of Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu. He is an only child who was raised in Scarborough by his grandmother and mother following his parents’ divorce. He learned Amharic while living with his grandmother and also spoke it with his mother.

He was a regular attendee at Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church services. He stated concerning his father, “I saw him briefly when I was six years old and then again when I was 11 or 12 years old, when he had a new family and children. I’m not even sure where he lived — I’d only see him for a night. I’m sure he’s a great guy. I never passed judgement on him. He wasn’t abusive, he wasn’t an alcoholic. He just wasn’t there.”

Tesfaye has compared his adolescent years to the film “Kids Without AIDS.” He began smoking marijuana at the age of eleven and later experimented with ecstasy, oxycodone, Xanax, cocaine, psilocybin, and ketamine. He admitted to frequently shoplifting to supplement his drug use. He attended Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute and West Hill Collegiate Institute. He dropped out of school in 2007 and relocated to Parkdale, Toronto.

Tesfaye began uploading music anonymously to YouTube in August 2009. He met Jeremy Rose, a producer with an idea for a dark contemporary R&B musical project, the following year. After initially pitching the concept to musician Curtis Santiago, Rose played one of his instrumentals for Tesfaye, who freestyled rapped over it, despite the fact that Tesfaye’s early work lacks rap.

Tesfaye embarked on his first international tour in April 2012, which included appearances at Coachella, sold-out shows at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom, which were lauded by Rolling Stone, and a number of European festivals, including Primavera Sound in Spain and Portugal and the Wireless Festival in the United Kingdom. In September, Tesfaye signed with Republic Records, and XO was assumed as a subsidiary label.

Tesfaye released his debut extended play My Dear Melancholy on March 30, 2018, following months of speculation and leaks. With 169,000 units sold, the EP debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, marking Tesfaye’s third consecutive number-one album and the shortest album to top the chart in eight years, by track count.

Tesfaye released his second greatest hits album, The Highlights, on February 5, 2021. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, becoming Tesfaye’s highest-charting compilation and the biggest first-week debut for a greatest hits album since Blake Shelton’s Fully Loaded: God’s Country in 2019.

Tesfaye attributes his primary musical influences to Michael Jackson, Prince, and R. Kelly. He has credited Jackson’s music with motivating him to pursue a career as a singer, citing the lyrics to “Dirty Diana” as an example.
