Anys was born on May 14, 1996, in Morocco. When she was four years old, her family relocated to Quebec, Canada. Her parents were professors. Anys studied chemical engineering at McMaster University before dropping out to focus on her streaming career full-time. She now resides in Los Angeles.

Anys started streaming on Twitch in June of 2013. Later that year, she began streaming on a $250 PC she purchased from a classifieds website after reaching Platinum status in League of Legends. Pokimane is a combination of the words Pokémon and Imane, her given name.
In 2017, she garnered 450,000 Twitch followers, making her account one of the top 100 most popular on the platform. The Shorty Awards awarded her the Best Twitch Streamer of the Year in 2017 as a result of her account’s popularity on the platform. According to the Shorty Awards, her gaming and comments on the popular game League of Legends drove her to fame on Twitch. Anys made a cameo appearance in a teaser for a new game mode in League of Legends.
