Nicole Mary Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on 20 June 1967, while her Australian parents were in the country on student visas. Janelle Ann (née Glenny), her mother, was a nursing instructor who edited her husband’s books and was a member of the Women’s Electoral Lobby; Antony Kidman, her father, was a biochemist, clinical psychologist, and author. 

Kidman is a dual citizen of Australia and the United States.  Additionally, she is descended from Irish and Scottish ancestors. Due to her Hawaiian birth, she was given the Hawaiian name “Hklani,” which translates as “heavenly star.” The inspiration came from a baby elephant born at the Honolulu Zoo around the same time.

Kidman’s father was a graduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa when she was born. He was appointed a visiting fellow at the United States National Institute of Mental Health. Kidman’s parents, who were opposed to the Vietnam War, participated in anti-war protests while living in Washington, D.C. 

When Kidman was four years old, her family relocated to Australia, and her mother now resides on Sydney’s North Shore. Antonia Kidman, Kidman’s younger sister, is a journalist and television presenter.
