Claire Elizabeth Cottrill was born on August 18, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

She was raised, though, in Carlisle, Massachusetts. She is an American citizen and a member of the Caucasian ethnic group. Her father is Geoff Cottrill, who has worked for several famous firms, including ‘Coca-Cola,’ ‘Converse,’ and ‘Starbucks.’

Cottrill began recording covers at 13 and frequently performed them at local establishments such as Blue Dry Goods. MTV approached her at this period to record a song for use as background music for one of their shows, but the song was never used.

While attending Concord-Carlisle High School, she began publishing music to Bandcamp under the names Clairo and DJ Baby Benz. She then moved on to SoundCloud, where she posted covers and songs in addition to DJ mixes of rap music. Additionally, she had a YouTube channel on which she posted covers and short films.
