Marilyn Vos Savant was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 11, 1946, to Joseph Mach and Marina Vos Savant. According to Savant, premarital surnames should be retained, with sons taking their dad and daughters taking their mother.
The word Savant, which means “one who is knowledgeable,” appears twice in her family: her grandmother was named Savant, and her grandfather was named Vos Savant.
She is descended from the physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach and is of Italian, Czechoslovak, German, and Austrian descent.
Savant worked at her father’s general store as a teenager and wrote for local newspapers under pseudonyms. She married at the young age of sixteen and divorced ten years later. Her second marriage, at the age of 35, ended in divorce.
She attended Meramec Community College and Washington University in St. Louis but left after two years to assist with a family financial firm.
In the 1980s, Savant relocated to New York City to pursue a career in writing. Before launching “Ask Marilyn,” she co-authored the Omni I.Q. Quiz Contest, which featured intelligence quotient (I.Q.) tests and expositions about intelligence and its testing.
