Early Life and Family
Ziegler was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Melissa Ziegler-Gisoni and Kurt Ziegler, a mortgage broker. She is descended from Polish, German, and Italian ancestors.
In 2011, her parents divorced, and in 2013, her mother married Greg Gisoni. Ziegler began her ballet training at the age of two and joined the Abby Lee Dance Company at the age of four, where she received instruction in tap, ballet, lyrical, modern, acro, jazz, and aerial dance.
Ziegler has a younger sister, Mackenzie, who is a dancer and singer who starred alongside her on Dance Moms, two elder half-brothers from her father’s previous marriage, and two older step-siblings from her step-father, Greg Gisoni, a vice president at Westinghouse Electric Company.
Ziegler was raised in Murrysville, but as a teenager, she began working and spent most of her time in Los Angeles.

Ziegler has won multiple titles at regional, state, and national dance competitions with Abby Lee Dance Company, including the 2014 Dancers Choice Award for Favorite Dancer 17 & Under. She appeared on the reality television show Live to Dance in 2010.
In 2011, Ziegler and her mother participated in Lifetime’s Dance Moms, a reality show about young dancers.
