Naomi Osaka’s father is a tennis teacher who began training his two daughters, Mari and Naomi, at an early age. He has always backed them up in their rehearses.

Naomi even said in an interview that her father is constantly nervous during her matches:

“I think he might take long walks because maybe my matches stress him out.”

She mentioned the following about Leonard Francois’ job, which is to train them:

“My mother always worked when I was growing up, and she worked a lot since my father was always with us. He was the one who coached us.”

He didn’t send his girls to school to ensure that he was fully committed to training them to be superstars. He instead homeschooled them, just like Richard Williams did with his children. He could connect their academic and tennis education in this way.

Mari and Naomi were trained by him, and he constantly encouraged them to do their best. He also believed that, because of the lack of support from the United States, it was better for them to represent Japan in international matches than the United States.

Leonard Francois’ Wife & Family

He married Tamaki Osaka, a Japanese woman he met in college in the early 1990s. This was around the time that Japan opened its doors to the first wave of international visitors.

Leonard Francois Wife

They met in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido. Francois was already in college in New York at the time, while Tamaki was still in high school.

Their relationship flourished during a time when interracial marriages were prohibited in Japan. As a result, Leonard and Tamaki had to keep their relationship a secret from the general public, including Tamaki’s family.

When they finally told Tamaki’s father about their relationship, he accused her of destroying their family name.

Despite this, they stayed together and secretly married and began a family. Mari and Naomi Osaka, Leonard Francois and Tamaki Osaka’s daughters, were born 18 months apart.

Tamaki’s family intended to divorce her from her husband, and she was not allowed to see Leonard Francois again.

Because of the distance between Naomi’s parents, she returned to Japan with her two daughters, who took their mother’s name, Osaka. This was done in accordance with the Japanese Family Registration Law (Koseki).

They returned to the United States after the reunion, where Naomi Osaka’s father, Leonard Francois, continued to coach them in tennis. Currently, the family resides in Japan.
