Early life, Family & Education
John Cena was born on April 23, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts, to Carol and John Cena Sr. His mother is English and French-Canadian, and his father is Italian.
Tony Lupien, a baseball player, was his maternal grandfather. Stephen is his older brother, and Dan, Matt, and Sean are his younger brothers.
He attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and then transferred to Cushing Academy, a private prep boarding school in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.
He then attended Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he earned NCAA Division III All-American honors as a center for the school’s football team. He wore the number 54, which is still emblazoned on some of his WWE merchandise.
Cena earned a degree in exercise physiology and body movement from Springfield College in 1999, after which he pursued a career in bodybuilding and worked as a limousine driver.
Career in Wrestling
Cena enrolled in Rick Bassman’s Ultimate Pro-Wrestling (UPW) academy in California in 1999. In April 2000, he was crowned UPW Heavyweight Champion. Cena made his WWF debut in October 2000 as a loser in a SmackDown match.
In January 2001, the WWF offered Cena another opportunity to appear on a SmackDown taping. This time, Cena prevailed and agreed to a developmental deal with the WWF, and Cena was assigned to the World Wrestling Federation’s Ohio Valley Wrestling division.
Cena auditioned for the main WWF roster four times in 2001, and this continued into 2002.
