In August 1988, Rogan began his career in comedy in the Boston area. He signed an exclusive developmental deal with Disney in 1994 after relocating to Los Angeles and appeared as an actor on several television shows, including Hardball and NewsRadio. He began his career in 1997 as an interviewer and color commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Early Life and Family
Joseph James Rogan was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 11, 1967. In the 1940s, his grandfather relocated his family there. He is of three-quarters Italian and one-quarter Irish descent.
His father, Joseph, is a retired Newark police officer. Rogan’s parents divorced when he was five years old, and he has not spoken to his father since he was seven years old.
The family lived in San Francisco, California, from the age of seven to eleven, before moving to Gainesville, Florida, when he was eleven. They settled in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, where Rogan attended Newton South High School and graduated in 1985.
Rogan played Little League Baseball but became interested in martial arts during his early adolescence.
Rogan began karate at the age of 14 and Taekwondo a year later. He won the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament as a lightweight when he was 19 years old. He was a four-time Massachusetts full-contact state champion and later became a Taekwondo instructor.
Rogan also competed in amateur kickboxing, where he had a 2–1 record; he retired from competition at 21 due to frequent headaches and a fear of further injury.
He enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Boston but dropped out early due to his dissatisfaction with the program. He was born and raised in the Boston area until he was 24 years old.

Rogan initially considered a career in kickboxing rather than becoming a professional stand-up comedian. He was a fan of comedy and comedian Richard Pryor’s film Live on the Sunset Strip from an early age.
Rogan relocated to Los Angeles in 1994, where he landed his first national television appearance on MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour. For $500, the network offered him a three-year exclusive contract and a role in a pilot episode of a “dopey game show” as a result of his appearance.
Rogan began his career as backstage and post-fight interviewer for the mixed martial arts promotion Ultimate Fighting Championship. On February 7, 1997, he made his UFC debut at UFC 12: Judgement Day in Dothan, Alabama.
Rogan hosted the eight-episode CBS show Game Show in My Head, which was produced by Ashton Kutcher.
Rogan launched a free podcast with his friend and fellow comedian Brian Redban in December 2009. The first episode was recorded on December 24 and was initially broadcast live weekly on Ustream, with Rogan and Redban “sitting in front of laptops bullshitting.”
