About Jabbawockeez

The Jabbawockeez (stylized as JabbaWockeeZ) are an American hip-hop dance crew best known for winning America’s Best Dance Crew for the first season in 2008. Kevin “KB” Brewer and Joe Tarot, two dancers from San Diego, California, formed an innovative dance crew in 2003. They entered dance competitions intending to upset the current dance landscape.

They thought that dance crews were clones of one another at the time, that they were dancing to the “top” of the music rather than going deep into it, and they set out to produce something different. They achieved a balance between dancing to the music and dancing as an artistic expression with Jabbawockeez, which showcased freestyle dance.

Phil “Swagger Boy” Tayag, Ben “B-Tek” Chung, Chris “Cristyle” Gatdula, Ryan “Kid Rainen” Paguio, and Jeff “Phi” Nguyen were all members of the Jabbawockeez by 2004. In 2013, Tony “Transformer” Tran joined the crew. The Jabbawockeez do not have a group leader; choreography, music, and design decisions are all made as a group.

The dancers donned ski masks and gloves to begin their performance. The mask and glove concept was inspired by Medea Sirkas, a strutting crew from San Francisco in the 1970s. Gary “Gee One” Kendall and Randy “DJ Wish One” Bernal were both the San Francisco Bay Area-based MindTricks dance team members. Jeff is a great guy. “We don’t have a lead dancer in our team,” Phi” Nguyen reveals. When you watch us perform, our idea is that you must watch us as a whole. It’s not about who we are or where we came from when we put on [the masks]. We’re all the same person.” Joe Larot came up with the moniker Jabbawockeez after the fanciful monster from Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem Jabberwocky.

The group eventually transitioned to their distinctive white masks and gloves, which fit their persona and image better. The Jabbawockeez recruited b-boys Ryan “Kid Rainen” Paguio and Chris “Cristyle” Gatdula to join San Diego’s group because of Gary’s contacts. The Jabbawockeez first performed as a group in 2004, with an eight-member lineup. Gary, Randy, Phi, Phil, Kevin, Joe, Ryan, and Chris made up this group.

Jabbawockeez added two more members to their group, bringing their total to eleven. Jeff “Phi” Nguyen, a Phoenix native, met Rynan Paguio at several tryouts and performances in the Los Angeles area and secured a seat in the Jabbawockeez in 2004 by defeating Kevin Brewer. Ben “B-Tek” Chung, a Kaba Modern alumnus, as well as b-boys Eddie “Eddiestyles” Gutierrez and Saso “Saso Fresh” Jimenez, joined the Jabbawockeez.

The Jabbawockeez dance style is characterised by an eclectic combination of several urban techniques, particularly popping and b-boying, as well as a deliberate synchronisation to self-created instrumentals dubbed “Beat-Kune-Do” by one member (a play on the word “Jeet Kune Do”, a martial arts style created by Bruce Lee). The Jabbawockeez debuted on America’s Got Talent’s second season in 2007. The group, which consisted of nine members, was eliminated in the Las Vegas callbacks episode. They auditioned for the first season of America’s Best Dance Crew in 2008 and were accepted. Mayhem, Tooboi, and Philani Mangezi are among the artists who have been requested.
