Meeks was born in Charlestown, Indiana, on April 27, 1979. When he was two years old, his parents split, moving in with his grandmother and father. Meeks’ father was an accomplished musician.

He began playing the guitar at a young age, and by the age of eight, he had written songs and played covers. He travelled to numerous rehabilitation institutions and spent a year in special schools between 11 and 15. During this time, Meeks formed Bad Dreamz, an experimental rock band that included Jesse Vest and Mat Taul.

They went on to form Dead Reckoning, a heavy metal band that sounded a lot like Pantera. After Meeks relocated to Louisville in 1995, Dead Reckoning renamed itself Days of the New and shifted its genre to acoustic rock and post-grunge.

Meeks said of that period, “I experienced paranoia and acid trips, as well as a sense of disconnection from my mind and body… That is the start of my spiritual journey.”
