Early Life and Family:
Shirley Jones spent her in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. Her mother (Marjorie) was a home designer, and her father was a businessman who founded Jones Brewing Company.
She started singing at the age of six in the Methodist Church choir and took voice lessons from Ralph Lewando.
She completed her high school education at South Huntingdon High School in Ruffs Dale.
Early stage career:
Her first audition was for an open biweekly casting call hosted by John Fearnley, casting director for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s different musicals.
Jones had never heard of Rodgers and Hammerstein at the time. She was the first and only vocalist to sign a personal contract with the songwriters. She was the first cast in a tiny role in South Pacific.
She began as a chorus girl for her second Broadway production, Me and Juliet, and then as an understudy for the lead part, getting outstanding reviews in Chicago.
Movie actress of the 1950s and 1960s
Jones’ musically trained voice delighted Rodgers and Hammerstein, and she was cast as the female lead in the 1955 film adaptation of Oklahoma.
Other film musicals, such as Carousel (1956), April Love (1957), and The Music Man (1962), swiftly followed, in which she was frequently typecast as a wholesome, nice figure.
She did, however, win an Academy Award for her performance in Elmer Gantry, in which she played a woman corrupted by the title character, played by Burt Lancaster.

Still, the show failed to garner high ratings and was cancelled near the end of the season. Jones also appeared as Drew Carey’s “older woman” girlfriend in multiple episodes of The Drew Carey Show and Shirley Partridge in a cameo in a 2000 episode of That ’70s Show.
Jones played Mrs Paroo in a California Musical Theatre performance of The Music Man in mid-2012, while her son Patrick played Harold Hill.
