Halston opened the Boulevard Salon on North Michigan Avenue in 1957. He relocated to New York City in late 1957 and began working for milliner Lilly Dache.
He was promoted to co-designer at Dache within a year. He eventually left Dache’s studio and began working as a head milliner for Bergdorf Goodman.
Roy gained early notice in 1961 when he designed a pillbox hat. The hat was worn by Jacqueline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy’s wife, at her husband’s presidential inauguration.
Halston began designing clothing after the hat vogue faded. He opened his first boutique on Madison Avenue in 1968.
In 1969, he founded Halston Limited, his first ready-to-wear fashion business. In a short period, his simple, innovative, and glamorous design became quite popular.
He mainly incorporated soft and sumptuous fabrics into his designs. Halston attracted the attention of celebrities such Babe Paley, Greta Garbo, Gene Tierney, Elizabeth Taylor, Margaux Hemingway, and Blanca Jagger. Between 1968 and 1973, he amassed a stunning $30 million.
During the 1970s, Halston expanded his firm into menswear, purses, luggage, beds, and lingerie. He had a few favorite models, including Pat Cleveland, Anjelica Huston, Elsa Peretti, Alva Chinn, Beverly Johnson, and Karen Bjornson, whom Andre Leon Talley nicknamed “The Halstonettes.”

He has introduced a new collection of cheap apparel, cosmetics, accessories, and fragrances. He attempted to keep his fashion products affordable, with prices ranging from $24 to $200. However, it had the opposite effect on his reputation among high-end fashion merchants.
The line Halston III was detrimental to his career due to its negative reception. Even yet, the brand was abandoned, and his firm, Halston Limited, was later acquired by Esmark Inc. in 1983. Halston began to lose control of the business.
By 1984, he had been entirely barred from designing original Halston Enterprises inventions.
