Steenburgen was born in Newport, Arkansas, on February 8, 1953, to Nellie Mae (1923–2010), a school board secretary, and Maurice Hoffman Steenburgen (1914–1989), a Missouri Pacific Railroad freight-train conductor. Nancy (Steenburgen) Kelly, a teacher, is her sister. Her ancestors hail from the Netherlands, England, Scotland, and Wales.
She enrolled at Hendrix College in 1971 to study drama. She then proceeded to Dallas on her theatre teacher’s recommendation, where she auditioned successfully for New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse.

She earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her third film, Melvin and Howard, in 1980. Another important film role was Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of The Yearling, in the well-received 1983 picture Cross Creek.
She also starred in 1985’s One Magic Christmas as a mother and wife who falls on hard times during the Christmas season and must rely on a Christmas miracle to save her family.
