The Andy Griffith Show

During the majority of The Andy Griffith Show’s run from 1960 to 1967, Smith’s best-known on-screen character was Otis Campbell, the local drunk. When he was drunk, he would amusingly let himself into his normal jail cell, using the key kept near the two pleasant jail chambers, and “sleep off” the effects of the alcohol.

Other performances

In the “Fifteen Paces to Fame” episode of Death Valley Days in 1957, Smith played Rollin Daggett, a newspaperman in Mark Twain’s early days. In 1960, he appeared in an episode of the TV series Perry Mason called “The Case of the Treacherous Toupee” (season 4, episode 1).

He played John Wilson in 1967, in the syndicated Western series Death Valley Days episode “The Man Who Didn’t Want Gold” and Mr. Weber in The Lucy Show.

Smith also had a morning children’s show called The Pancake Man on Los Angeles television station KHJ in the mid-1960s, sponsored by The International House of Pancakes (IHOP). In a 1971 episode of Brady Bunch named “The Winner,” he recreated his role as the Pancake Man as “Kartoon King.” In 1976, he also starred as Mother Goose in the X-rated animated feature film Once Upon a Girl.
