Concerning his family, David was born to Tom Byrne and Emma Byrne. Emma was a teacher and Tom was an electronic engineer. David also has a younger sister named Celia Byrne, who is a breast cancer specialist and epidemiologist.

When David was two years old, his family relocated to Hamilton, Ontario. They relocated to Arbutus, Maryland, when David was eight or nine years old. The family was forced to flee Scotland due to two factors. One is Tom’s employment, and the other is the family conflicts caused by David’s parents’ mixed marriage.

Moving on to his educational background, David attended and graduated from Lansdowne High School in southwest Baltimore. Later in his career, he enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design and Maryland Institute College of Art. He did, however, decide to drop out of college.
