2002–2014: Early career, Martin and Brown cases

During Crump’s tenure as a lawyer, he represented the family of African-American driver Genie McMeans, Jr., shot by a white state trooper in 2002. During 2007, Crump represented the family of Martin Lee Anderson, a teenager who had died following a beating by guards in a Florida youth detention center in 2006.

On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman in his Florida neighborhood. The victim’s family retained Crump to represent them.

Mr. Crump also handled the case of Ronald Weekley Jr., a 20-year-old African-American skateboarder who was beaten by police in 2011.

In August 2012, Crumps represented the family of African-American activist Alesia Thomas, who died in police custody. According to journalist Chuck Philips, Thomas was “slammed to the ground, shackled behind her back, kicked in the crotch, hog-tied, and shoved into the back seat of a police car, where she died” during her arrest by Officer Mary O’Callaghan.

Crump requested that the incident’s dashboard footage be made public, threatening legal action and urging Attorney General Eric Holder to start a federal investigation.

One of the arresting policemen was charged with the criminal assault of Thomas in October 2013 and pleaded not guilty. The district attorney’s office requested that the footage be released solely to prosecutors and defense counsel, and Judge Shelly Torrealba agreed. This was done to keep possible juror candidates from being tainted, according to O’Callaghan’s lawyer, Robert Rico.

The family of Michael Brown stated on August 11, 2014, that they would be hiring Crump to defend them in their case, especially because the killing had been likened to that of Trayvon Martin.

Crump also represented the family of Tamir Rice, an African-American teen who was murdered by police while clutching a toy pistol in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2014.

2015–2019: Continued police brutality lawsuits

As a lawyer, Crump did a lot of work with the family of Antonio Zambrano-Montes, the undocumented immigrant who three police officers killed in Pasco, Washington. Kendrick Johnson, an African-American teenager, was also represented by him in 2015.

He was discovered dead at his school in Valdosta, Georgia, under unclear circumstances. However, he left their legal team in late 2015. Crump began defending the family of Corey Jones, who was slain by a plainclothes cop in South Florida while waiting for a tow truck.

A Tulsa police officer shot and killed Terence Crutcher in 2016, an unarmed black man. Crump began representing his family in 2016. Ben Crump Law, PLLC, a new law firm, was founded in 2017 by Crump.

Crump represented the family of NBA G League player Zeke Upshaw in a wrongful death action in 2018 when Upshaw collapsed in the middle of a game and was denied help by NBA paramedics. He also joined the National Black Justice Coalition’s Board of Directors in 2018.

Crump teamed up with legal firm Pintas & Mullins to organize a series of demonstrations in Flint, Michigan, for residents affected by the Flint water disaster in 2019. Crump also started representing numerous women in a case against Johnson & Johnson in 2019, arguing that the company’s talc powder was directly linked to their ovarian cancer diagnoses.

2020 cases

The Crumps began to work with Ahmaud Arbery’s family in early 2020 after two white civilians killed an unarmed 25-year-old African-American. In the same period, the family of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor, a police shooting victim, retained Crump to help the family in their lawsuit against the Louisville Chief of Police.

2021 cases

In early 2021, Benjamin Crump began representing the family of Christian Hall, a 19-year-old Asian-American who was dead after being shot by troopers in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

After reports of a troubled man with a gun on the bridge, Hall was shot and killed on the overpass to Interstate 80 in Hamilton Township in December 2020. Hall allegedly became uncooperative during talks and pointed his revolver at cops, according to troopers. The State Police opened fire, hitting Hall.
