Early Life and Education:
Sorkin was born in New York, the son of writer Joan Ross Sorkin and lawyer Laurence T. Sorkin of Cahill Gordon & Reindel.
A 1995 graduate of Scarsdale High School, Sorkin attended Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, majoring in communications and belonging to the Sigma Pi fraternity.
Career:
Journalist
During his senior year of high school, Sorkin worked as a student intern for The New York Times. While in college, he also contributed to the paper, publishing 71 articles before graduating.
Initially, he wrote media and technology articles while assisting Stuart Elliott, an advertising columnist. In 1996, Sorkin worked for Businessweek before returning to The New York Times.
In 1998, he spent some time in London. After studying at Cornell, Sorkin wrote for the New York Times about European business and technology. He served as vice president of Sigma Pi at Cornell.
DealBook:
Sorkin started DealBook, a newsletter about Wall Street and deal-making, while a reporter with The New York Times. In the early days of the Internet, DealBook was one of the first financial news aggregators.
Sorkin created a companion website in March 2006 that provided new stories and original analysis throughout the day.
DealBook won a SABEW award for overall excellence and a Webby Award in 2007 for Best Business Blog. In 2008, the site won the Eppy Award for Best Business Blog.
